Gallery Youth been open to young people in Alnwick town centre for 25 years. Initially, through our Drop in sessions, acting as a meeting place for young people with little or nothing to do on an evening. However, through time we have developed a wide range of support services for young people in Alnwick and the surrounding rural area. We are constituted as a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee under our official name ‘Alnwick Young Peoples Association’. The organisation is overseen by a voluntary board of trustees .
Alnwick is seen by many as a picturesque town within the backdrop of the historic castle and gardens. Yet, for young people there is another side, which recognises that they are often marginalised and isolated, leading to them feeling lost within their own community.
In an average year we have contact with around 350 individual young people. We have worked on issues such as homelessness, food poverty, sexual health, positive relationships, mental well-being, bullying, unemployment, boredom, peer pressure, low self-esteem, abuse and rural isolation. We have responded to these issues by delivering advice and information sessions offering one to one support, group-work, and signposting to other specialist agencies.
We run a development program throughout the year, which has focused on working with groups of young people. This has included single gender work, art workshops, the development of the Alnwick Freeriders Bike Track and other diversionary activities.
Gallery Youth is a valuable resource for young people. We take a partnership ethos in our approach to youth work and have worked well with various organisations locally and countywide. We aim to offer and deliver services and activities that are relevant to young people. We listen to and advocate on behalf of young people and believe that they have an important role to play as valuable members of their local community.
